The following letter appear's in today's Daily Telegraph:

"Sir, The RNLI's reasons for calling a ship "she" (letter, Mar 22) fail to include an argument for this terminology that was used in respect of warships in the 18th Century, namely "because it costs so much to keep a vessel in paint and powder"".
