There are two uses of the word that I can recall off hand.

The first is the label on the bag of black pearls in PD and is said by Captain Flint to refer to the Spanish or Portuguese word for black.

The second is when Pete sees the negative photographic image in Big Six and assumes and says out loud that the subjects of the photos are n*****s. It is not meant maliciously or offensively, he was not familiar with negatives and thought the colour of the images faces was normal not negative. It was perfectly normal and acceptable English usage in those days.
