I don't know about other railway enthusiasts, but if I see an A4 Pacific going past at speed, I think "She's a beauty" or something similar. Likewise the most famous A3 Pacific, "Flying Scotsman", despite the masculine name.

In addition, the first steam locomotive to haul a train under the control of a railway preservation society, "Dolgoch" of the Talyllyn Railway, was (and probably still is) known as the "Old Lady" by her enthusiast crews.
