"Tapered joint" gets my vote. In the States, the term "scarfing" refers to the practice of fastening two timbers together end-to-end by nailing or screwing another timber to them, overlapping the joint equally on either end. It's generally used to replace a section of floor joist which may have broken or rotted away. Cut away the bad wood, insert a section the same length, and scarf the pieces together.
