Just to add more confusion to this thread, I thought I'd chime in here.

Other US boatbuilders may want to correct me, but I don't believe we make the same distinction between the two words -- in the States "frame" and "rib" mean the same thing. Many boatbuilders I know prefer the term "frame" to "rib", but that may be a regional thing (I'm in New England). We do say "sawn frame" to mean one that has been sawn to the proper shape (usually from one or more pieces of naturally bent wood), but you can have steam-bent frames as well.
