The Louisville Lip's reaction to the word "boy" was no different from what might be expected from any black American, since it harks back to the days of slavery and the century of oppression that followed. In most parts of the States, but especially in the South, every black man was addressed as "boy," whether he was eight, eighteen, or eighty-five.
