A further consideration is that it would have been very difficult for working-class children to have had the kind of adventures enjoyed by the Swallows and Amazons. Jacky, for example, points out how he had farm chores to do every day. The Death and Glories were an exception -- living on the Broads and with fathers in boatbuilding. Even so, if the D&G's parents had been self-employed, I bet the kids would not have had so much free time. I suppose AR could have written gritty politically-correct stories about slum kids playng make-believe in London alleyways -- but I for one (child of working-class parents) am glad he didn't.
