I think that they were, and may still be, for all that I know, simply passed on from mother to daughter in a verbal tradition. I did see, a couple of years back, a lovely little book called "My Mother Said . . . ." which was a compilation of these little warnings which mothers used to try to get their "would-love-to-be-Nancy" daughters to fit a mould of which the G.A. would approve. I didn't buy the book, and now I wish I had, as I have never seen it again.
