I realise that I am probably a member of almost the last generation of British schoolchildren who routinely learned Latin. My next brother also went through to Latin O-level but the youngest of the family (only three and a half years younger than me) did Classical Studies which did not include much actual Latin language. I think it was the decision of Oxbridge to abandon the requirement for a Latin O-level that killed nearly two thousand years of requiring Latin to consider yourself educated in the British Isles! How easily are long lasting traditions overthrown! By the way I took my O-level in 1968!
