Tony Kerins is an interesting chap with whom I am regularly in contact. He approached the job of illustrating the Puffin covers by reading the books thoroughly, then roughly drawing five or six scenes in crayon or pastel for perusal by the series editor, who would choose one.
Tony then took photographs in the Lakes and on the Broads to help him do a large, messy (his word) charcoal drawing to establish the composition. From this he made an accurate pencil sketch before the final Artwork which was done in several media including water-colour, oil, ink and gouache.

Of the originals one (Picts & Martyrs) was given to the Puffin series editor and another (Pigeon Post) to Tony's brother. The others are all privately owned and are definitely not for sale!
