I'll get in first before anyone else from the old country! A caravan is definately a 'trailer'. A trailer to us is a small open box on wheels for carrying general goods. There is also a 'trailer tent' which is a bit like a semi-collapsible caravan so that the driver can see through his rear view mirror, and the thing is generally more manageable. The sides are folded in for pulling and opened on site.
An RV to us would be a motor-home though I remember in the 50's them being refered to as 'dormobiles' this may have been a trade name (a bit like Hoovers for vacuum cleaners!). In many areas caravans are loathed by those who have to follow in a line of traffic behind them on our narrow twisty roads, with litle chance of passing. They are then disparagingly called 'grockle-boxes'. (Grockles being an equally disparaging term for tourists (Holiday Makers!) by the locals in the areas visited.
