Another good magazine in the '40s was Children's Play Mate. Then as a teenager I enjoyed the Scouting magazine, Boys' Life. Some of Robert A. Heinlein's best early books first appeared in that magazine.

Incidentally, and taking this discussion full circle, according to the Urban Legends Reference Pages, there were no off-color names used in Cap'n Pugwash.
