Peter, did it have its dustcover? That makes all the difference apparently.
I picked up two first edition AR's last year in my trip to the UK for 25 pounds each and a later edition with the end maps by Steven Spurrier for ten pounds. The first editions have not got their dustcovers but the Spurrier does and it also has the early dedication (To the six for whom it was written in exchange for a pair of slippers).
But I got them for love, not money. I remember clearly reading through the entire collection as a child, getting them from the library one by one and loving the dustcovers as much as the books. If I could have afforded it(and airlines didn't have a weight restriction) I would have brought the whole reprinted collection which I saw for sale in two places in the Lake District, just for the dust covers.
