don't think that's why he made Nancy ill.

He had to make *somebody* ill, to activate the quarantine that made most
of the book possible. If anybody but Nancy had been ill, they would
have more or less dropped out of the story. But with Nancy ill, her
imagination and force of personality enable her to stay in the plot,
indeed to run it by remote control.

Just now I'm smiling as I recollect the bit at the end where Nancy
learns that Peggy, in her absence, has been using all her personal
copyright phrases.
