The Pullman trilogy starts out very promisingly. Book one was very enjoyable (although I found his anti-christianity hard to stomach). Book two was also good (but darker), but book three declined and (in my opinion) ended very suddenly with a whimper. It was almost as if he ran out of ideas (or perhaps space to express them).
