I'm a bit on Robert's side about the acceptance of the possibility of being hurt when you're playing. I think the deciding factor for kids might well be, Was the hurt deliberately inflicted?

I had my arm accidentally broken when I was ten by a friend I was horsing around with, and I didn't have the slightest vestige of annoyance with him -- it was just one of those things. (He, on the other hand, was absolutely horrified.)

But one of my (now adult) daughters is still very bitter at her elder sister over an action from their middle teens that was designed to hurt -- clearly it rankled then, it still does, and it probably will forever. Certainly it has helped shape their present distant relationship.
