I too don't understand how the M mutates into a P, but I note that
the same consonant change occurs in going from Mary to Polly.
The fact that Polly is a diminutive or variant of Mary has been discussed
previously (or mreviously) on Tarboard.

I'm not very good at understanding relationships among consonants.
Take Welsh for example. I can understand 'bach' being the same as
'fach' (single F in Welsh is pronounced like English V, and B and V
are obviously related), but it's entirely non-obvious to me that
'mawr' should be the same as 'fawr'.
