Thanks, PD, yes, clubs generally start a little aft of the sail's tack and run for only the after part of the foot.

(Note to readers -- the Swallow that Dave refers to is his 36' ketch, not the dinghy belonging to Holly Howe.)

UK "horse" is US "traveller" (different to UK traveller, used on the Holly Howe Swallow to help raise the yard,) and can be an iron rod or a rope span. On the other hand, a horse isn't essential for use with a self-tacking jib (there I go, Jonathan,,,,) -- Teasel's self-tending foresail had a sheeting arrangement that consisted only of a block at the clew and a turning-block on each beam.
