One of the saddest things is how journalistic standards (yes, they do exist) slip during slow news seasons. This is especially so in July and August in the Northern Hemisphere and in December and January in the Southern Hemisphere. These months are rightly called the "silly season" because any old rubbish can and will be printed just to fill up the paper or bulletin. I remember in 1997 the jounalistic frenzy started in the UK when John Prescott (talking about Thames pollution or something like that) found crab and was photographed with it calling it "Peter" (sc Mandelson).
Motto - insist on better, but expect worse.
