We have recently returned from an excellent caravanning holiday in the Hebrides. I took my copy of Great Northern? along with me, and we felt we were fortunate in seeing many of the flora and fauna mentioned in the book. There were several locations which would have been just right for the cove and the 2 lochs. Unfortunately, we didn't see any Great Northerns, although we saw a couple of smaller divers.
We came across a creature that, surprisingly, is not mentioned in Great Nothern? Dick would have almost certainly met it while sitting watching the birds, especially since the wind had dropped. I do not believe that anybody would sit undisturbed without noting the presence of this creature. I mean, of course, the famous Scottish midge. We certainly met it!!
