Having reviewed my books (cursorily), I find that in SD, he hung the watch on the tent pole, but there's nothing to indicate the type. I may have been influenced by contemporary usage. Still, I wouldn't be surprised at his keeping whatever kind of watch back at the camp - no tides, and the sun would surely do (as it started to in SW) for deciding when to stop for meals ( come to that, Roger would probably be highly accurate there too!).
