Perhaps he came from Hong Kong by ship to somewhere in the Middle East, Basra in Iraq perhaps, and then took the Baghdad to Berlin railway, or even to a port in the eastern Mediterranean and took the train from there. If he was in a hurry that would have been several days quicker than a ship from India through the Suez canal and then via Gibraltar and the Bay of Biscay. The train would also have landed him in England closer to his destination rather than Southampton or Tilbury.
