What was the contemporary Lake District reaction to S&A stories?

When AR's books were first published in the 1930s, how did the Lake District population react to being "fictionalized" and publicized? While I doubt there were any "Swallows & Amazons Cruises" on Coniston Water, as available today, did people come to the area to seek out the actual sites as folks do today?
