Thanks very much, Forrest! You've just earned an acknowledgement in my Ransome bibliography. The points you make are quite interesting. I'll check them out further, and would welcome hearing from anyone else about points like this. They remind me of the rewriting some of the Doctor Doolittle stories have suffered in later editions, because of perceived racism and racial stereotypes.
