Andrew's description is intriguing, and entertaining, but it seems to me to get us no closer to the origin of the phrase. Somewhere in the back of my mind I connect it with a folk tale, involving a baker and the devil tussling over something or other - a very Ransomeish reference, but I can't quite place it - can anyone else help?
