There is a short article by the late Martin Lewis in ‘Despatches’ (published by the Arthur Ransome Society) for Easter 1991. He claimed that the remains of Speedy were still off Skipper’s (Mastodon) Island. The identity was confirmed by seeing the remains of the windlass as mentioned in the SW text. The main difference was that the real barge was lying parallel to the shore and not at right angles, and there was certainly no decking left on the forepart. If anyone has still got their copy of Despatches for 1991, it’s on p 8, and there’s a photo.

I should add that Martin’s is only one of a number of informative articles in Despatches over the years. I seem to remember last year a proposal to republish some of these in a ‘Despatches Digest’ – this seems a good idea. Is it still on the cards, does anyone know?
