What made AR go for mastodon in SW as a prehistoric woolly elephant over mammoth? Apart from that book I don't think I've seen any other references to these creatures. Was it just to link with Speedy's owners name - Don? Or had the species just been identified in the 30's and hence was in the public domain? Is it in fact distinct from a mammoth or the same creature using a pseudonym? So many questions, any one got any answers?
