One of my favorite adventures as a child was going to the county fair each fall, because only there could we buy saltwater taffy and Hokey Pokey, both made on the spot. Hokey Pokey was made in a special freezer with many small compartments, so each serving was frozen individually. The unit sat in a vat of brine and ice, and was agitated back and forth, rather than round and round. The ice cream came out as rectangular bars or cakes, about 2 by 3 by 1/2 inches, with the consistancy of an ice cube and not much more taste, but they were wonderful.
