As a Patrick O'Brian enthusiast, I was puzzled by Jonathan's mention of him and mousing sisterhooks. I specialise in trying to connect my two favourite authors, for instance Rupert Hart Davis was one of O'Brian's early publishers as well as being a friend and literary executor of Ransome. Patrick O'Brian has a character named Ransome in a couple of his early books.

I have read all of O'Brian's books and am blessed with a good memory, I can't recall him ever referring to mousing sisterhooks. I am sure I would have remembered that idiosyncratic usage especially since it has been harped on in this forum so often. He does have one of his characters ask for "double sister-blocks well coaked" to help in their attempt to escape from a French prison.
