'The work he's done is copyrighted'

Not true, I'm afraid. Knowledge by itself cannot be copyrighted. If I discover the derivation of a word and publish it on a website, anyone can use that knowledge in another publication. What copyright protects is the way the knowledge is expressed. This means that Ed's exact wording cannot be copied. Ed has to face the fact that all the discoveries he has posted on this site can be republished by others. That is the problem with online publishing.

Having said which, the use by TARS of Ed's research without his permission would be totally unacceptable and I'm sure would not be contemplated.
