The Latin words of consecration were said inaudibly by the priest so the
mainly iiliterate faithful could not hear them, and hence, could not
repeat them. The Protestant reformers, seeking to disprove the Catholic
theology of sacrifice, were educated enough know the words and their
meaning. They deliberately corrupted the words to undermine the faith
of the uneducated laity.
