It is not the length (or the loudness) of the dit that is of interest, but the pause between the dits. On an old Morseapparatus there was a pencil, writing long and short marks on a paper strip. But a trained telegraphist could hear the message, without reading the strip, as the pauses are of the same length as the marks.

The problem of how to know where a letter starts and stops is not greater than to how know it when listening to spoken language (which could be difficult enough, as you probably can find out of this mail)

So I don´t think there was any problem for two experienced seamen as Captain Flint and Nancy to communicate with taps on a ships bulkhead.
