As it's an indirect quote, we could argue^h^h^h^h^h debate forever whether "Sail was the thing" was part of what John had said, or Roger's reaction to it. I'd always taken the two parts as "Steamboats are just engines in tin boxes. Sail is the thing!" in John's original statement, here expressed indirectly. Anyone have a copy of tS&tA handy to see what it looked like in an earlier draft? (There's another project for you Ed, now that you've finished the core canon. Or are you doing CitN?)
