A child's bow would not have the range to get from launch to shore. But a crossbow is much too dangerous for children to play with.

Captain Flint is steering the launch, and he clearly knows just what his elder niece is up to.

I propose that he has loaned Nancy his crossbow, to be used with one of her own arrows, not with a regular quarrel, to be shown to Polly, for this one occasion only.
