Thanks, one and all, for the info on seedcake. I'm familiar with (and fond of) pound cake, and thought it might be something like that. Not much else could safely be stowed atop a basket of eggs, as seems to be the Swallows' common practice. Calling scramblers "buttered eggs" has always confused me, though, especially since AR makes reference to both "buttered" and "scrambled" eggs.

I think "cookie", over here, is a pretty generic term for what you might call a "biscuit": sweetened batter, of varying consistancies but prone to spread out when baked, baked on a tray to varying degrees of chewiness or crispness. The scones I've made have been a bit different; more bread-like, but again, baked. "Biscuits" here can mean any number of things, either thick batter dropped in mounds from a spoon and baked on a tray, or, as I usually make them, a butter-rich dough cut up and baked (I can give you a dandy recipe if you'd like).

I'm curious to see what "bunloaf", is though.

Alex
