I've always known it to be a holiday in which the rich would use the left over gift boxes to give items to the servants and staff. It used to be a sacred holiday in Canada but like Sunday shopping it is wide open now for retail sales. I din't think that returns are as common on this day as stores are just trying to unload the stock that wasn't sold for Christmas.
