I have been thinking on this matter over the weekend, after my return from Australia and the death of a good friend from breast cancer at 46, a good wake up call to life and its length.
My brother, who is a lawyer as well as an engineer, is always of the opinion that you settle things. Maybe AR knew the ways of old England and money, and that GO or more specifically his parents knew someone in Sonnings - or the solicitor said to Sonning's - it is not worth the adverse publicity to involve the full weight of the law.
My brother tells great tales of quid pro quo in settling matters. (Some Latin fiend will translate that line I am sure.)
Also AR was at the end of the real story so why delay closing the book. After all a good story has a start, middle and end, and BS had reached a nice clear end for the D's. Pity CN has no middle, char fishing would not have held a book together.
