Fascinating map, Jonathan. I plan to use it in my Cultural Geography class next year.
Two questions.
(1)Is "coke" really used so widely as a generic for all types of soft drink in the South? "Do you want a coke?" ... "Yeah, I'll have a Seven-Up." Is that plausible?
(2) What is the "other" use that is widespread in VA and NC? (The pockets of "other" in the Southwest I presume are due to a low response rate -- one or two individuals throwing the pattern off.)
Getting back to revolting soft drinks, I remember at the 1994 AGM in Ambleside trying a Burnet-flavoured pop which we thankfully shared with Dave Sewart and some of his gang on the summit of Loughrigg (sharing got rid of it more quickly.) No-one was surprised that that flavour failed to sweep the country (though my mother used to make a fairly potent burnet wine that wasn't too bad.)
