If you look on your pictures of the Broads you will see lots of thatched roofs.
The reed beds on the Broads were harvested evey year for thatching and still are in places otherwise they would choke the waterways.
However it is a very labor intensive process and Polish reeds are being used quite a bit as the labor is cheaper there.
But they say Norfolk reeds are best and last much longer.
Thatching was popular for roofs in many parts of the country giving excellent insulation and weather protection.
