There was a feature programme on BBC Radio 3 tonight about folksongs, and in particular how they had been rescued from oblivion in the early 20th century.
They quoted Myfanwy Thomas, now 94, the daughter of Edward Thomas who was killed in 1917 in WW1. She told how her father had taught her not only English folksongs, but also some of the songs the soldiers sang at the Front. And she added a story that she was invited to the Ransomes' home as company for Tabitha. One day, Ivy's mother was there, and Myfanwy was invited to sing something to entertain the family. Unfortunately she chose a barrack-room song, and was very baffled that Ivy's mother thought it most improper.
Do we see an early sign of the GA here?
