You're certainly right Peter. In Swallows & Amazons at War, mine and Ed Kiser's sequel, we felt that a motherly type of child was not needed as Molly Blackett and several of the now adult Swallows & Amazons filled the gap if necessary. In any case, our plot needed the children involved to behave as children would in the circumstances, rather than quasi-grownups.
