The matter-of-factness does indeed make it even more sad, Elizabeth. It's a clear sign that Tabitha been emotionally abused by Ivy, being a victim of the recently-recognised Parental Alienation Syndrome. (We probably could have guessed this anyway.)

Although part of the paper is self-serving, there's quite a good description of PAS a few sections into the link below

I've always felt extremely sorry for AR on account of this. Ivy was psychotic, and both Arthur and Tabitha were made to suffer for it all their lives.

Can anyone provide any details of Tabitha's later life? One suspects that she suffered a life-long disablity to form a proper adult relationship with a male as a result of her mother's treatment of her as a child.
