This seems very defeatist to me. There have been superb, popular versions of what would on the face of it seem to be 'unstageable' books, including Pullman's series. I don't think we should underestimate the abilities of the National Theatre's adapters. Of course there are no guarantees, but it might well turn out to be brilliant, and with their track record I'd say that was the likely outcome.
