There is a point in the story where the WILD CAT sights a square rigger - one of the big four posters. Peter Duck is much affected by the sight. I think this episode may have been suggested by a passage in Claud Worth's "Yacht Cruising", where Worth, in the Channel, aboard TERN II, sights one of the last clippers.
THERMOPYLAE was a clipper, three masted with skysails above her royals - not like the picture which is a four poster like the F. Laeitz and later G. Erikkson ships.
