It's still a common practice in the States. As a matter of fact, in the citrus belt, one may purchase a "juicer" - a short plastic tube with jagged edges on one end and a collar in the center. Just twist it into the end of the orange, squeeze, and suck. It's supposed to keep the bitterness of the orange peel off your lips. Personally, I'd rather taste the orange than the plastic.
