Nope, 'Lord Jim' was the one I read, but in Anthony Powell's 'The Acceptance World', part of 'Dance to the music of Time', there's a reference to a well known negro Mayfair partygoer, smart as you like, popularly known as 'The Narcissus of the Nigger'.
Not quite the same social circle as Pete, but similarly authentic.
