Yes, they asked for permission, and they offered to include an acknowledgement. But they said their printer could only use the free downloadable version at a size of 2 cm or something (which seemed crazy to me) and would I please send them a much higher-res version they could use. I said that as I knew many people had downloaded and printed the available maps at A4 size, I wasn't really prepared to favour them over everyone else -- especially as in any case the maps were only going to be used as background images on the program, exactly as you've described.
After that I heard nothing from them at all -- no acknowledgement of receipt of that message, no thanks for my letting them use the maps at all (which wasn't necessary, but would have been polite,) and now, apparently, no acknowledgement in the program itself, despite their undertaking -- "of course we'd credit you however you like in the programme and could send you some copies." (And no, no copies yet, either -- but I'm not holding my breath.)
So they didn't really act in the true S&A spirit, did they? Takers, not givers. And the funny thing is, I had the feeling pretty-well all along from Michelle Knight's emails that something like this would happen -- which is why I asked TarBoarders about it at all.
Ah well, I guess it takes all sorts.
