I suspect that this is literally true. They're putting on a show to attract a general, new audience, not specialists and fans- although I'm sure they aren't trying to push those away.

I found (from, what I could see in the programme) that I was interested by the adaptations they had made, but not to the extent of wanting to go to the theatre to see it.
