I find that most often, the performance stands between me and reality

Demonstrating once again the old truth, that text has the best pictures, or in this case the best sequences.

I've seen some splendid adaptations of books for TV or film, but they were always proper adaptations, in which a skillful script writer wrote what was really an original script based on an over-arching idea from the book. And of course, now I try to think of an example, my mind has gone blank... Or of course produced a host of irrelevant counter examples (like the superb BBC le Carre adaptations in a quite other genre). But feature film adaptations are always at risk because of their tiny running time (typically less than two hours) which leads to massacre by compression, or in the case of TV series which have far more time, the lack of time and money for preparation.
