Hope you enjoyed the book (if you have finished it by now). As you say it is told in the first person by Bill, who (like Trease) wants to be a writer – even though he does not have long hair – but tells people he plans to be a teacher. Two children in the family, though I can’t remember if the book says who is the elder, Bill or Sue. No mention that I recall of their father, just “family difficulties” causing several earlier moves. Bill is in the “middle school” at Grammar, so older than John Walker (who is 12 or so in SA). In No Boats on Bannermere he notices that Penny is attractive; I gather they have an on/off romance in the next four books.
I was googling for details of the Bannermere series, and found the Quiz on Trease/Bannerdale that I included in the Wikipedia article.
And there is a Cryptic Quiz on Arthur Ransome too (actually 7, search for Ransome)!
